Occupying 10% of Botswana’s Landmass
Nestled in the heart of Botswana, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) exerts a significant presence, dominating the nation’s central landscape as depicted on maps. Thanks to its sheer size, traveling by land from east to west or north to south often necessitates circumnavigating this vast expanse, adding considerable distance to journeys. But, being a protected area, it’s a necessary detour.
Just how extensive is the CKGR?
Well, it boasts an impressive area of 52,800 square kilometers, making it the largest natural game reserve in southern Africa and the second largest in the world! To put this into perspective, it’s larger than countries like the Netherlands and Slovakia!
This immense expanse is characterized by endless stretches of white sands interspersed with sparse bushland. Under the relentless African sun, traversing this landscape can feel like an endless journey to the next destination.
By the way, “bush” refers to dense growths of low shrubs, predominantly acacia trees known for their resilience to drought. Despite months without rain, these trees’ deep roots anchor them in the white sands, showcasing remarkable vitality.
Wildlife Sightings in CKGR
True to its name as a game reserve, CKGR is home to a diverse array of wildlife.
While the reserve spans a vast area, safaris typically focus on the northern region’s open expanses, particularly the Deception Valley. During the rainy season, wildlife from northern Botswana migrates southward in search of fresh, verdant grass for grazing and breeding.
During the wet season, CKGR transforms into a verdant paradise, with creatures like giraffes, elephants, zebras, and hyenas thriving amid the lush landscape. However, as the dry season approaches, the scenery takes on a golden hue, with hardy animals such as wildebeests, gemsboks, hartebeests, jackals, and springboks becoming more prevalent. Of course, the lions maintain their pride and majestic presence throughout the year.
While wildlife sightings are also possible in the southern areas, experiencing them requires courage and a spirit of adventure. There are no water sources, gas stations, or accommodations in this untouched wilderness of bush and sand. It’s a place where a robust 4WD vehicle, along with ample supplies of water, petrol, and food, is essential for embarking on an expedition into this untamed terrain.
